Yes we need to promote awareness of men’s health- both physical and mental. When my son was diagnosed 18 years ago at age of almost 18 I didn’t believe the diagnosis was correct because I knew very little about schizophrenia-I don’t think I’m the only one who was ignorant. His teachers and a school social worker met and not a single one of them attributed his failing classes to that. There is no mental health system in place for people with schizophrenia and no support system from our government for caregivers of people with schizophrenia. Most of society has the luxury of being able to be ignorant of all this. The rest of us are our sons social workers and advocates and nurses - we have to be because no one else in society is going to be there for them. Jails and prisons are filled with people who were suffering from delusions and hallucinations when they committed crimes. Society is apathetic for the most part and able to ignore people who can’t advocate for themselves. I’m doing all I can to change this.
