The Sporting Mo’s of the US

Across the US, top pro athletes and teams have been seen rocking the moustache for Movember with some incredible efforts across the NFL, MLS, NHL, and MLB.  While there are just far too many to acknowledge all of them, here are a few of the big Mo highlights from around the wide world of sports.

National Football League
Many players across the NFL can be seen channeling their inner Ditka as they take the field on Sundays in Movember.   Three teams in particular have really taken their Movember efforts to the next level:

  • Jacksonville Jaguars: Inspired by the epic moustache of Jaguars owner, Shad Khan, the Jaguars’ Offensive Line and QB Chad Henne have been seen roaming the gridiron in what they are calling ‘The MOvement’.

  • The Denver Broncos: The Broncos have been on a tear in Movember, winning three straight games, fueled by the power of the Mo.  Many fantasy sports analyst will agree that Mo Bro and Broncos wide receiver Eric Decker has been one of the top Fantasy Mo’s out there this month.

  • San Francisco 49ers:  Led by the front office father/son Mo efforts of Jared & David Muela, the 49ers have recruited an army of players, staff, and fans to their Movember team, which currently has 73 members! The 49ers are undefeated in Movember with key Mo efforts being made by fan favorites Joe Staley and CJ Spillman.

Major League Soccer
For the second straight year, Movember has been an official MLS W.O.R.K.S. “Soccer Kicks Cancer” partner.  So far, the MLS Network has every team represented, with 388 total participants who have collectively raised over $23,000 so far! The MLS has raised the stakes in the MLS Network by offering to match the top individual’s fundraising effort, as well as offering an awesome prize package that includes a $500 Visa gift card and copy of EA’s FIFA 2013. If you’re an MLS fan – join the network!

National Hockey League
This year Movember was named an official NHL “Hockey Fights Cancer” partner with many teams like the Columbus Blue Jackets, Minnesota Wild, Anaheim Ducks, Washington Capitals, Dallas Stars and Phoenix Coyotes joining in on the action.  As many of you know, the players have been playing pond hockey thus far, but this hasn’t deterred them from sporting their lip sweaters!

With the help of the NHL Players Association, legendary Mo Bros George Parros and Mike Brown are having a good old fashioned Mo Down Throw Down to see who can raise more funds. Donate to your favorite player today!

Major League Baseball
There is just something about relief pitchers and moustaches. Some of the best relievers in baseball history have dawned Mo’s – Goose Gossage, Dennis Eckersley, and, of course, Rollie Fingers to name a few.  This year, we have some strong contenders for the MLB Moustache Hall of Fame:
  • Sam LeCure: After helping the Cincinnati Reds take down the National League Central crown and one of the best records in baseball, Sam and his upper lip have been kicking butt this Movember, raising close to $1,500 by offering autographed hats and balls to donors.  The big prize however is a guitar signed by every member of the 2012 Cincinnati Reds team!

  • John Axford: A third year Mo Bro and one of the top closers in baseball, Axford has made a name for himself around the MLB with a power fastball and a power moustache.

  • Ryan Cook: The All Star reliever for the Oakland A’s chopped off his playoff beard and went baby faced for the start of Movember.  Although his lip is sparsely populated, Ryan is quick to note that no follicular enhancements have been used in manicuring his Mo and everything he has is all natural.
