Movember is personal to me. And while I love a good 70's stache, harken back to Ponch from CHiPs, I love what it represents even more.
My husband's best friend is a testicular cancer survivor. He was diagnosed in his 20s...in his 20s!! He was otherwise a healthy, active golf pro with his entire future ahead of him, and instead of enjoying crazy nights out with his friends, he was in and out of the hospital fighting for his life. That type of shift does something to a person. And while he is thankfully cancer-free, the effects, both physically and psychologically, are with him to this day, 20 years later.
One of my best friend's husband was tragically lost a few years ago after a heroic fight against bladder cancer. He leaves behind his amazing wife, his two children, and everyone who loved him. His fight will not be in vain. So I also do this for him and for his family.
Movember looks at men holistically. They understand that a diagnosis is not just something that physically happens to you, but that there is an extreme emotional change that also occurs from that moment on. Supporting men's health both physically and emotionally increases the overall survival rate.
I am proud to be a part of the ModMed Urology team and our work to keep Urologists focused on what matters most...the patient.
Please stand with me in support of Movember and each and every one of the men who have had to face cancer and depression head-on. Let's show them that they are not alone.
