My motivation

My motivation is to bring much needed awareness to men's mental health especially in the medical student community. A medical student undergoes four years of a rigorous and intense curriculum before spending 3-10 years in postgraduate training. All of this can greatly contribute to the student/resident being depressed, anxious, guilty, ashamed and even suicidal at times. My goal is to increase the awareness of the reality that medical students, regardless of academic or clinical ability, can suffer greatly while others may remain completely unaware.

Medical students are perceived as industrious, intelligent, ambitious, resilient and resourceful. Unfortunately, this may contribute to a culture in which admittance of struggle in academics, personal, or any domain of life and mental/emotional burnout can be perceived as a weakness. From this pressure, fears of losing one’s license, judgement from one’s peers, dismissal from an academic position, or the potential for legal penalties can stifle a student’s willingness to actively seek help. So, the student suffers tremendously and quietly.

Schools have come up with creative and well-intentioned methods to try to alleviate the academic and social pressures a student may face. They have implemented wellness resources, psychology counselors, even yoga and meditation. I believe if more people in the medical community, especially medical students, residents and attending physicians who have been through the training process, voice their own experiences about this issue, as well as the fear of receiving a negative reaction for admitting struggle, the stigma whether real or perceived will improve.

Systematic reporting and a stringent data-driven analysis of mental illness and suicide in medical school needs to be established in order to help address this national issue. The benefits of the data should outweigh any concern of image, marketing, or reputation of prestige for any institution. To neglect this would be a dangerous minimization of this issue to the public, the medical profession, and the patients we will help in the future.

Please, join me and spread this awareness and donate if you believe this is an important cause. Thank you.

I would also like to thank Octavio Herrera for leading the charge on creating the Movember Armaan Handlebars Haleem Team as well as all of my friends who have supported and showed me love since I started medical school.
