This is my 3nd year participating in Movember. Since the beginning of the spring of 2020 I’ve been thinking a lot about my mental health and my well being. There was a time in 2011/2012 were I hit a real low and I had moments about taking my life. There were even times during my childhood I thought it was the easy way out because I thought no one cared about me. I felt pushed aside, in the background, a push over. I let people control my emotions and how I lived. Sometimes those thoughts still haunt me and I feel emotionless. Eventually, I worked those emotions and it led me to fall in love with cooking, which led me to my wife. She has been my rock. I’ve talked about this with her and she’s encouraged me every step of the way. I am not looking for sympathy or “oh my god I didn’t know”. I bring this up because I’ve decided to advocate to the @movember movement. I’ve known about Movember or as others know it as no shave November since 2016. At first it was a fun way for me and my fellow co workers to keep our mustaches and make fun of each other. But as I learned and researched more about Movember; I’ve learned that it’s more than looking funny for a month. It’s a movement that’s leading to change the face of men’s health, suicide prevention, prostate cancer and testicular cancer. Men’s health has been put aside because men tend to have “machismo” and are told to “deal with it” or “don’t be a bitch”. I’ve heard this time after time growing up— this is a toxic way of thinking. 3 out of 4 suicides are men. 1 in 9 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime and testicular cancer is now more common in young men. This is the time for us men to take care of ourselves and talk about our mental health. I have joined a group called Move for Movember where you can walk or run 60 miles over the month and every miles is for the 60 men we lose to suicide each hour, every hour across the world. I want to raise money to donate and I have a goal of $250. If you would like to donate please click on my link in my profile. No dollar is to small or to big. #movember
