Mental health and suicide prevention

It’s Movember season! For those of you who don’t know, this is the time of year where you’ll “hear” my rally cry for your support in reducing the stigma around mental health. The conversation around mental health has come a long way this year- both at a corporate level in terms of the Benefits we provide our workmates, and through strong individuals like our Workday brand ambassador, Naomi Osaka. Her courage, as well as that of superstars like Simone Biles and Rory McIlroy, were such inspiring acts of honesty and transparency that we can use as a launching pad to push the conversation around mental health!

This year has provided me first-hand experience of material struggles with my own mental health. It has given me the opportunity to experience the conscious effort it takes to get myself back to being mentally healthy, how important a support network is, and the importance of discussing my mental health and my challenges with that network. My experience wasn't something I saw coming, but it reinforced my commitment to such a critical cause, and why I believe it is more important than ever to support our families, friends, children, workmates, etc. through fostering a safe environment for communication about mental health.

Even with our progress socially, the rate of suicide globally is alarmingly high, particularly in men. Too many men are still ‘toughing it out’, keeping their feelings to themselves and struggling with their mental health in silence, often without a support system needed to get through difficult times. This is primarily due to the stigma that exists today around mental health and the lack of communication around real feelings and emotions.

Although mental health is a common buzzword these days, the stigma that continues to exist today around mental health needs to end. The Movember Foundation is aiming to reduce the rate of male suicide and I am working to change the way people support friends, colleagues, and family members with mental health challenges, both clinical and the challenges that you and I face on a regular basis.

I appreciate your support in this cause, whether it be through financial contributions or taking the conscious effort to open the conversation around mental health and support a loved one who may be struggling with their own mental health.
