As I approached my 49th birthday in the worst shape my life, I decided that I needed a reset. What better way to reset than to set a major goal.....like run a marathon. This October I plan to run 26.2 miles through the city of Chicago with Team Movember at the BoA Chicago Marathon. My first thought was to register for the lottery and let fate decide. Part of me hoped I’d get in, a bigger part of me was terrified I would. But when lottery day came around and I got the “sorry try again next year” email I was completely bummed. So I started looking at all of the charity partners and decided this was something I needed to do.

I considered a couple of local charities but as I scrolled through the list I came across Movember. The more I read about the organization the more I know that if I was going to do a crazy thing like run a marathon, this is the charity I wanted to run for. Great, but why????

It all started with the mustache. As some of you know, Mitch (my dad) was rocking the stache WAY after and WAY before they were cool. It was his signature look for most of my life. Sadly, we lost my dad in 2020 after a 10 year battle with kidney cancer. It didn't take long before Movember = mustache = dad, so I figured I'd run for dad.

But the more I looked into Movember, the more I connected. One of main things they do is fund prostate cancer research, something that directly impacted my family. My brother-in-law Kurt was diagnosed with stage 4 prostate cancer at the age of 45 (4 years younger than I am now) and fought for 15 years. We lost Kurt in 2020, about 6 months after dad.

So I'm running in honor of dad and Kurt, 2 men who've had a big impact on my life. If they were able to fight 10-15 years, I can figure out a way to get my fat ass to move 26.2 miles. Yes, that means I'm running for me too. This is going to be a long, inspiring and sometimes frustrating journey, but what the hell.

To take part in the marathon I have committed to raising $2,000 for the cause. If you have a dad, brother, son, uncle, or any other male figures in your life, please consider donating and/or sharing my link.

Thank you all!
