My motivation

Hey, my name’s Mark Schattenberg and I’m climbing for Expedition Mustache Madness in 2022 on Denali, where our goal is to help men who struggle with mental health problems.

Recently in my life I’ve personally struggled though the highs and lows that come with getting hit by a car during a morning jog. In a moments notice how I coped with life was gone, a void in my life appeared and my identity vanished. I was a runner and paddler turned couch potato with a broken leg and a bruised rear to show for it.

Our goal is to show men there is a light in the middle of every struggle. Through movement and brotherhood we can be there for one another. Personally experiencing this with my brothers, I thank those that have held me in times of extreme lows and have helped me see the peaks.

Denali is a perfect metaphor for our journey as men with its constant uphill climb, long hauls, hardships and brutal cold. Men are drowning is this world that’s more and more focused on what we are intuitively designed to do. Academia takes center stage where trades use to thrive. Less and less men are graduating from college and struggling with suicide and depression. I want this climb to be an example for one simple thing: a place where men can be men! Through that, hopefully we can help others understand there is hope and there are healthy outlets for coping with mental health issues!

Brotherhood, movement and talking more, can bring someone back from the depths of despair.

Mark,
Your journey through your difficult and lengthy recovery is remarkable in so many ways. To rise above the pain, both physical and mental, has shown such strength of character and determination. Your journey may not be at its end, but you are stronger and wiser from it.
Our hearts and prayers go with you as you climb Denali, and always!

Mark, I just read your article and I could not be more proud of the man you are today. Thank you for sharing your struggles and dedicating yourself to shinning a light on men’s mental health. I’m not sure if you remember me, but I was your teacher when you were very young. I work with older students now. I have one student in particular who was in a car accident and has a traumatic brain injury. I tell him every day that I know he is meant to do great things. I feel deep inside of me that one day he will inspire people. I can’t wait to show him your article tomorrow! Keep growing! We never stop learning!!! Marcy Brooks
