Testicular cancer

In July 2019, I first noticed a sharp pain in my testicle while biking to work when peddling and wrote it off as nothing. I thought "no way it could be anything serious and time would fix it, I am young and healthy." I was wrong.

I went to my doctor and got a physical examination. The doctor didn't notice any masses and ordered an ultrasound. Instead of waiting two weeks for that appointment, I went to the ER a few days later. Multiple masses were found.

I was diagnosed with testicular cancer in September 2019 and had my right testicle removed. My prognosis was good (chances it spread), so I opted out of chemotherapy. Roughly a 15-20% chance of returning. Unfortunately, during my 6-month check-in, the cancer resurfaced in my lymph nodes and lungs. I started chemotherapy immediately following those scans in May 2020.

I completed 3 cycles of BEP chemotherapy which encompassed over 100hrs of treatments in the summer of 2020. It was a wildly chaotic time. The pandemic was in full swing, my wife was pregnant and I was working at a startup where we were nearing a public launch. In August, a month after finishing treatments I got the results from my follow-up scans and the cancer responded well to the chemo. The masses in my lungs disappeared and my lymph nodes reduced in size. The plan from there is surveillance scans for 5+ years. LFG
