Prostate cancer

Fourteen years ago, my Father was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer. He was 69 years old at the time of his diagnoses. My family was optimistic that he would beat Prostate Cancer for several reasons. First being, that he caught it early, and secondly that he wasn’t your average 69-year-old. At the time my dad looked more like my older brother than my father. He played tennis every day, and regularly competed in USTA senior tournaments with lots of trophies to prove it.

But that optimism quickly faded shortly after his surgery to remove his Prostate Gland. The biopsy results came back with a Gleason Score of 8. A Prostate Cancer Gleason Score or Grade helps to determine how aggressively the prostate cancer is likely to behave both in how quickly it grows and how likely it is to spread outside of the gland.

The long-term survival rate with a Gleason Score of 8 or higher isn’t good.
His doctors strongly recommended a round of radiation therapy to the Prostate Gland bed and surrounding tissue. All I could think about was how sick the
radiation was going to make my father.

To my surprise and everyone else, it barely slowed my father down. He would go to radiation therapy one day and the next morning be out on the tennis court with his team, showing no side effects whatsoever.

After the first round of radiation therapy was completed, he continued to be monitored with quarterly PSA tests. Within 6 months his PSA levels started to rise leading to discussions of hormone therapy. This was not a favorable option for my father due to the severe side effects which basically would take him from being a super senior to an inactive geriatric man.

To him it was all about the quality of his remaining life and time with his family.
In the end it was his decision, and he chose not to pursue any further treatment.

After a year of slowly rising PSA levels and “my families anxiety levels as well”, I received a phone call from him saying, “my numbers have gone down, and the lab actually ran the test twice to confirm it wasn’t a fluke”. The Dr. said, “what are you doing”? He replied, eating steak, drinking vodka, and playing tennis…in other words enjoying life! The Dr.’s advice was “keep it up and I’ll see you in 3 months.

I’m happy to say my father did just that, for another 14 years!

On July 2, 2022, my father lost his courageous battle against Prostate Cancer. He defied all odds, and it never broke his spirit! I miss him every day. But I know he’s no longer in pain and reunited with my Grandparents, Great Uncle Sollie, Uncle Barry and Aunt Sharon.

I’ve participated in the Movember fundraising effort for the last 6 years, as a tribute to my father’s fight against Prostate Cancer, as well as his unwavering fighting spirit.
