To honor our nation’s veterans and to help shine a light on veteran suicide, Mo Bro Sean Lopez walked 20 kilometers for the 20 vets who take their own life every day.
As a seasoned Mo Bro, Sean has been taking the Move challenge for many years. However, the challenges of this year made it even more important. As a man who has dealt with addiction and depression, Sean has used physical activity to help him overcome his mental health issues. However, with gyms being closed in Los Angeles and having to work from home, Sean was forced to change up his routine to keep himself mentally and physically healthy so he began to take walks early in the morning.
It was during one of those walks, Sean had the idea to do a different kind of challenge. He decided to walk 20 kilometers for the 20 veterans we lose to suicide each day on the weekend before Veteran’s Day. Along with the physical challenge of walking 20 kilometers, Sean hopes to be able to raise awareness for our military community and the issues they face and to raise $1,000 for Movember.
“For me Movember is not a destination; it’s a vehicle. It provides me a medium to be of service to humankind, and to experience fraternity while avoiding the isolation amplified by COVID restrictions and characterized by depression.”
Sean plans to turn this into an annual event and do it until at least 2030. He hopes he can inspire others to take up this challenge where they live and that we can improve the lives of those brave veterans who we’ve lost.
