On Sunday, May 21, 2023, the motorcycling community united for a record-breaking instalment of The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride (DGR).

DGR is the world’s largest motorcycling charity event. Once a year, lovers of vintage and classic motorcycles get together around the world in their most dapper outfits to ride and raise money for men’s health.

Movember has been the official charity partner of the event since 2016.

Record-breaking numbers

In 2023, there were DGR rides in almost 900 cities from 107 countries across the world.

More than 100,000 riders took part, swapping their leathers for their finest get-up. Their common goal: to raise funds and awareness for prostate cancer and men’s mental health. Altogether, DGR 2023 raised a remarkable and record-breaking USD$7.35 million for men’s health.

Funds in action

Since joining forces in 2016, DGR and Movember have invested over USD$23.35 million into cutting-edge prostate cancer research, initiatives that improve quality of life for men living with prostate cancer and innovative men’s mental health projects.

Two mental health projects receiving additional funding to extend piloting activities are Project Pit Stop and Quay Riders.

  • Project Pit Stop, based in Bournemouth, UK, creates an open and friendly space for the motorcycling community to come together. The environment encourages motorcyclists to connect and create – or strengthen – social connections. Project Pit Stop uses a health-by-stealth approach, delivering important mental health messages all while providing practical bike maintenance tips. The project includes in-person social gatherings, an online community, talks given by mental health specialists, access to a family physician and a mechanic to work with the riders.
  • Quay Riders, based in Dorchester, UK, connects riders from different generations at a motorcycle workshop. Older and younger men come together to build, modify, and fettle with motorcycles to take on outdoor adventures. The aim is to improve emotional wellbeing by creating a supportive community where all participants can contribute – regardless of their distinctions.

First funded in 2020, these projects have demonstrated positive outcomes within their local communities. Further funding will allow them to strengthen their project delivery to achieve impact and reach more men.

A message from the founder

The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride Founder, Mark Hawwa, comments on the 2023 event: “I would never have expected that 12 years into The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride, we would be celebrating such an incredible milestone – raising record-breaking funds for our charity partner, Movember.

“Since 2012, this global community has gone from strength-to-strength, with this year being our strongest ever. It’s clear that the DGR community has stretched beyond what we ever could have imagined, and that the dedication in each city is proof that folks just need a chance to get together and connect with their fellow riders.

“We are proud of what we have been able to achieve, and will continue building on top of this passionate event to keep bringing people together and, most importantly, saving men’s lives.”
