My motivation
Fundraising for cause areas including:
Men's health
Prostate cancer
Testicular cancer
Mental health and suicide prevention

Twelve years - half a generation. Enough to look forward to what your kids will do and where your parents landed you. For me, it's sandwich generation time - adult kids, aging adult friends, and very adult parents.

My pop completed his treatment for prostate cancer this year and rang that bell with more fervor than a Vegas boxing ring official. Despite all the complications (as Lou Reed sang) he was a rock and roller and it was alright.

This year's goal is a bunch of 100s: $100k lifetime. 100% checking in on friends (near and time, time and distance wise) who need to know there's a safety net. Top 100 fundraiser finish (for a sixth year in a row). And as of today: 100 days until the official start of Movember.

As I’ve heard from decade of campaigns, men’s cancers, mental health and their intersections impact nearly everyone. I'm squarely in the middle of that Venn diagram this year.

Our theme song for men's health and mental well-being isn't something in a minor key, it's not emo, it's not shoegaze. It's an anthem. A march. A downfield. A 40-minute long Phish jam with major arpeggios that melt your face and make you smile.

Your generosity and support have also been 100% or more as I’ve had 5 consecutive years in the top 100 in the US, 4 $10k+ years and a lifetime total over $85k

This year's goal (as a starting point): $15,100 taking me to $100k lifetime. Another top 100 finish.

My "Mo Your Own Way" goal once again this year is to complete 60km on the rower, in memory and honor of a wonderful former co-woker who committed suicide earlier this year. I will share some personal, musical and less reasoned things as I pass various fundraising goals, and starting early this year will help.

Happy Thanksgiving -- with a nice boost from two long-time, loyal and wonderful donors, I hit my goal of $15,100 for 2025 and have raised $100,000 for Movember over the last 12 campaigns. Of course, I bumped goal up a bit, in true Sun Microsystems sales style.

A few quiet minutes in the coach's locker room after learn to play ice hockey with the NJ Devils Youth club. Our son Ben started playing in 1998, and after a few years of managing I got my USA Hockey certificate and coach the Under-8s. It's a wonderful, large, and caring family -- much like the Movember crew, and one more reason why so many NHL players support Movember. Partly this grows out of the legacy of Bruin/Leaf/Golden Knight Phil Kessel, who beat testicular cancer and set the NHL ironman consecutive games streak. Partly it's because the NHL has always been about facial hair when the going gets tough.

3 Week(s) Ago

Spotted these heads of romanesque broccoli at the Asbury farmers market on my morning Dunkies power walk. They are incredibly fractal; very Mandelbrot “Fractal Geometry of Nature” (with liberties). And why does this remind me of men’s cancers? Because each cancer is literally that unique and branched in genomic variation, local cell environment, immune system reaction and the cancer’s mutation and resistance. We are truly trying to solve the intensely complex - and your intense support helps with research and awareness

Hello Movember Day Two! I shared this picture because it reminds me of two big turning points -- the Ben & Jerry's cow when I discovered their ice cream, a major contributor to my weight gain over the ensuring 40 years, and the Moog Taurus pedal shirt, which I wear unironically now that I can call myself a bass player. Movember is about being intentional, practicing self-care, and being aware of your personal health context. Thank you, donors, friends, co-workers, family and all who have shared very personal stories with me

Today's side trip -- few meetings at Princeton University and I stopped for a selfie with Henry Moore's "Oval With Points." Seen head-on the negative space resembles a head and torso; seen from the middle it's a little threatening; seem from the side it bears an uncanny resemblance to Richard Nixon in profile. That's the Movember tie-in: we see what we want in appreciating this art; getting others to appreciate our view (however arcane) really helps drive understanding. Men's cancers, men's mental health, or 1970s bronze installations -- please really do talk among yourselves

That's a wrap everyone!! My immediate thoughts: Wow, thank you for your generosity, and deep appreciation for raising the conversation around sensitive and formerly stigmatized topics of men's cancers and mental health.

At $15,206 your generosity support and love brought this campaign to a new single year high, introduced 22 new donors to Movember, connected me with new and old friends with common bonds, and currently pushed me into the top 50 of US fundraisers. It truly takes a team.

And to bid farewell to Movember -- a callback to my opening shot -- The Parlor Mob at the Stone Pony, a homecoming show, a celebration of life and loudness and the hope that a high intensity band playing a shore bar brings to those kids huddled on (just a block from) the beach.

Last donation was from a former Sun Microsystems boss whose guidance and clarity I always appreciated, and in his honor -- I'm raising my goal to $14,000, for a lifetime total of $84k (84 of course is the year "This one goes to 11" entered the vernacular)

Over the summer I read Gerda Barker's memoir "Don't Stand In Line," an homage to the late punk/early industrial music scene coming out of Chicago largely featuring Barker's husband -- Paul Barker -- as bass player for Ministry. The mental health issues of everyone in and around the band, including Al Jourgensen, and the cameo appearances by Billy Tucker (Princeton area Regressive Aid, several tours with Ministry) and his eventual suicide after a bout with testicular cancer, were remarkably and poignantly conveyed. Instead of a tell-all torrid tale, Barker shares what it was like for the band families to deal with the roller coaster of emotions and creative outputs, the joy of music and the despair between. It was definitely in my Movember 2023 notebook as one of the better views of the impacts of men's cancers and mental health.
