Men's health Prostate cancer Testicular cancer Mental health and suicide prevention
As Nigel Tufnel once said, "This one goes to 11." My 11th Movember campaign is bigger, better, and yes, one louder than before.
After losing our mom to pancreatic cancer early in 2024, our dad was diagnosed with prostate cancer just a few months later. He's under treatment, feeling good, and told me early on "Use my story for Movember this year."
So here's his story: Dentist, saxophone player, handyman, fisherman, painter. He taught me about jazz, being a father, and finding the right fastener for all problems. He has always been "one higher" in his own quiet way.
As I’ve heard from you over the last decade of campaigns, men’s cancers, mental health and their intersections impact nearly everyone. I'm squarely in the middle of that Venn diagram this year.
Our theme song for men's health and mental well-being isn't something in a minor key. It's an anthem. A march. A downfield.
Your generosity and support have also been "up the way up" as I’ve had 4 consecutive years in the top 150 in the US, 3 $10k+ years and a lifetime total over $68k.
This year's goal (as a starting point): $11,910 taking me to $80k lifetime. Another top 150 finish. And of course, let's turn the amp all the way up, all the way up, then go one higher.
It's personal for me.
My "Mo Your Own Way" goal once again this year is to complete 60km on the rower. I will share some crazy things as I pass various fundraising goals, and starting early this year will help.

Hi Hal,
Thanks for the work you do! My family has struggled for the last two years with both mental health and cancer. In fact, I stepped away from the tech industry to support a few members of my family

Thank you Mo Bro and Mo Sis from around the world. With 12 days to go in Movember, I was at 95% of my original goal this morning. Last donation was from a former Sun Microsystems boss whose guidance and clarity I always appreciated, and in his honor -- I'm raising my goal to $14,000, for a lifetime total of $84k (84 of course is the year "This one goes to 11" entered the vernacular)

hello movember 2024! let’s do this - warm up post hockey row to get started
easy like sunday morning (for you 70s fans): 3,800m and some Goose live at Red Rocks. love ir when the two opening jams fill my 20 minute row with light and funky bass
40km of 60km and happy halfway thru Movbember! i’m on the Sheraton Boston rower for the 2nd time in a week. watched rowers on the Charles this morning and impressed, again
Thanks to some remarkably generous donors, I'm just $43 shy of another $10,000 year. I've heard from a few old work friends who were there for my first few Movember campaigns, and some newer co-workers who share a passion for promoting health and health issue awareness.
Over the summer I read Gerda Barker's memoir "Don't Stand In Line," an homage to the late punk/early industrial music scene coming out of Chicago largely featuring Barker's husband -- Paul Barker -- as bass player for Ministry. The mental health issues of everyone in and around the band, including Al Jourgensen, and the cameo appearances by Billy Tucker (Princeton area Regressive Aid, several tours with Ministry) and his eventual suicide after a bout with testicular cancer, were remarkably and poignantly conveyed. Instead of a tell-all torrid tale, Barker shares what it was like for the band families to deal with the roller coaster of emotions and creative outputs, the joy of music and the despair between. It was definitely in my Movember 2023 notebook as one of the better views of the impacts of men's cancers and mental health.
nice 15 minute row - instead of hydrow athlete i chose the Trey Anastasio Band show from 4-30-22 in Atlanta, one of the last amazing shows with the late James Casey at full strength
Hit the 1/4 point in rowing last night with a solid 20 minute Buffy "sweat row".
Am I feeling it today? Yes. Am I feeling the Movember love on 11-1? Bigger yes! Am I feeling the incredible support and encouragement of this 55-person boat, pushing me past the halfway point in fundraising? Huge yes!
A first for me: Three days in a row (pun intended) putting in the work, the leg push and the meters. I've connected my Strava app (which I use religiously to track workouts and long walks) to Movember so my rowing auto-posts over here.

Duran Duran was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame over the weekend, and guitarist Andy Taylor missed the gig because he's dealing with stage 4 metastatic prostate cancer:
https://www.theguardian.com/music/2022/nov/07/duran-duran-andy-taylor-reveals-he-has-stage-4-cancer
Duran Duran was a staple of my WPRB DJ years before their music settled into the music vernacular ("Girls on Film", "Rio", "Hungry Like a Wolf").
Today is the 48th Hebrew calendar anniversary of my Bar Mitzvah: the story of Noah. People think of the post-flood rainbow as a covenant (commitment); the key word in the preceding passage is "remembered." The rainbow appears because the Almighty remembered Noah for doing the right things even under pretty weird circumstances.
It seemed auspicious for the weekend to start Movember as I have more people, more stories, more personal impact to remember, lives impacted and dignity and bravery and sometimes weird circumstances. And I make an increasing commitment to raise money, push my physical limits, and raise awareness.
You guys are nuts!!! (How appropriate!!). Goal #3 passed on the way to an all-time campaign record, aiming for $35,000 lifetime and maybe 5 figures this year?
