Mental health and suicide prevention

Mental health, suicide, and suicidal thoughts have been part of my story for a long time. I’ve come close to losing that battle myself, and in 2021, my best friend lost his brother to suicide.

In 2019, I ran my first marathon in a straitjacket as a way of naming the invisible weight so many of us carry — the mental straitjackets we try to outrun every day.

In early 2024, that story became deeply personal in a new way when my older brother Ben told me he’d been having suicidal thoughts and had secretly attempted it in 2023. I asked him to trust me with one thing: let’s train for a marathon together to raise money to support men like us. Running had helped me when words couldn’t.

Eight months later, we crossed the finish line of the 2024 NYC Marathon together through Movember. The following day, my brother approached me with tears in his eyes and said, "I was just served divorce papers." I gave him a hug and said, "I'm proud of you for continuing to take the next step even when things are hard, and I'll be here to support you in the next one, whenever that may be."

Since then, we've kept running — Chicago in 2025, and now Berlin in 2026 — not because the problem is solved, but because it ISN'T!

Men’s mental health doesn’t improve in a single moment. It improves through consistency, support, and people willing to keep showing up — even when it’s inconvenient, uncomfortable, or far from home.

This year, we’re running the Berlin Marathon to continue supporting Movember’s work around men’s mental health, suicide prevention, and the reminder that no one has to take the next step alone.

If this story resonates with you, I’d be honored to have you run alongside us in spirit. Your support helps turn conversations into action — and helps men everywhere keep going when the road feels long.

In addition to running the 2025 Chicago Marathon, I'm attempting to run 500 miles in 2025 for men's mental health.
